When I talk about mining to other academics the connection that they have with this form of primary industry are photographs of people working at mines — Sebastian Salgado’s work, typically. The thing about mines is that there’s no real way to understand how big they get until you are in one. These photos at least give you a sense of how awesome they are as aesthetic — and sometimes very sinister — objects.
