Here is a good article on the increasing role of the PRC in the Pacific. The article focuses on Papua New Guinea, and is right on target — there have always been Chinese expats in PNG, and the Pacific has always been a place where Taiwan and the PRC have fought for diplomatic recognition. But with a mainland firm operating the Ramu nickel mine and other expansion in the area, Chinese interest in the Pacific is taking a notably different form.
