Spink sentenced… maybe
by Alex
An anonymous poster on an earlier entry about indicted drug dealer and former anthropology major “Doug Spink”:http://alex.golub.name/log/index.php?cat=27 has announced that Doug Spink has been “sentenced to three months in a minimum security prison”:http://alex.golub.name/log/?p=369#comment-17026. I have no idea whether this is true or not — Google News had some brief articles on the trial, but none of them mentioned Spink’s sentence. It looks like the prosecutor was more interested in the people running the ring than in Doug, who was basically a mule.
This is bizarre.
I am currently writing an Anthro thesis at Reed, and my topic led me to Douglas Spink’s 1993 project, “The Structure and Meaning of IBM”. Out of my own anxieties about the prospects of an Anthro undegrad, I googled his name–where would a person who wrote on a similar topic to my own be 12 years later?
Jesus Christ.
Hi Alex…Congratulations on your dissertation!!
It’s very funny and wonderful that a followup search for Doug Spink turned up your blog. When I was home for Thanksgiving I heard through the sister of Doug’s old roommate at Reed (who is also my best friend from a now comparatively Rockwellian childhood in Anacortes) the heartwarming story of our fellow Reedie.
I’m glad to report that the 3 month rumor is just that. He was actually sentenced to 3 years. He was apparently helping support the habits of lawyers & judges in the Seattle area and was caught last February with 379 POUNDS OF COCAINE in the back of a rented SUV. Dude! 379 pounds! OF COCAINE! That’s the GDP of a small country!

Spink was part of a drug ring that smuggled high-grade marijuana from British Columbia into the U.S. in exchange for cocaine. The conspiracy was “a very substantial drug-trafficking organization with active ties to Mexico and Canada,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Ron Friedman said in court papers.
It also involved members of the local legal community. Two attorneys – a former Snohomish County deputy prosecutor and a former part-time Edmonds Municipal Court judge – already have pleaded guilty to federal crimes for helping hide drug money.
Anyway, I am excited to hear that you are both post-natal AND in love. Mazeltov!
