The Lyrics of ‘Nulla in munda pax sincera’
by Alex
In a strange and yet typical twist of internetdom, an “ancient post of mine”:http://alex.golub.name/log/?p=50 has become the home of a small but growing community of people desperately seeking the lyrics of Vivaldi’s lovely motet “Nulla in munda pax sincera” (known to most people as the theme song from the movie ‘Shine’). I often wonder what Vivaldi would think if he knew that today his piece evokes in the minds of most listeners the image of a middle-aged Australian man bouncing up and down on a trampoline wearing nothing but a raincoat. At any rate to make the world a better place here they are:
Aria:
Nulla in mundo pax sincera
Sine felle; pura et vera
Dulce Jesu, soia spe
Inter poenas et tormenta
Vivit anima contenta
Cast amoris, soia spe
Recit:
Blando coloere oculos mundus decipit
et occulto vulnere corda conficit.
Fugiamus ridentem
vitemus sequentem
has delicias ostentando;
arta secura vellet ludendo superare.
Aria:
Spirat anguis inter flores
Et colores explicando tegit fei.
Spirat anuis, sed tegit fei.
Sed occulto factus ore
Homo demens in amore
Saepe lambit quasi mei.
Alleluia.
Which means:
There is no true peace in the world without bitterness; in you, sweet Jesus, it is pure and rightful.
Amongst teh anguish and torment lives the contented soul, is only hope, chaste love.
The world beguiles our eyes with alluring colors and consumes our hearts with hidden wounds. When it laughs, let us flee from it; when it pursues us, flanting its delights, let us shun it; for by carefree conduct and amusements, it would over come us.
The serpent slithers through flowers, and whilst it shows the beauty of it colors it conceals its venom. The serpent slithers, but it concelas its venom. But he who is dumbstruck and insance with love, will often lick it as if it were honey.
Alleluia.
There. Never say I never gave you anything.

Helfgott loves the movie. I ve written some yrs ago on ´Shine` and the cultural appropriation of Helfgott`s biography represented in it, but realize I ve not spend any attention on the movie`s theme. Shame on me.
i love this piece, and ordered music fo rit. however, i only go the the quartet parts. thanks to thi slovely website, i can now sing along! hurrah
Thank u for the lyrics
Exellent !… It’s one of my favorite pieces,
but I never understood what it meant.
(must admit I also know it from seeing Shine…
But the piece has for me grown beyond the movie ;) )

Thank you – such a woderful sound so many pictures in ones mind.
Thank you for the work! I’m looking for this from hours!! Just one little thing: soia spe, is soLa spe. With “l”. In latin “only” is “sola” or “solo”, it depends by the gender (in italian too!).
Thank you again
It’s been more than 10 years since I’ve first listened “nulla in mundo pax sincera” as one of the excellent classics in Shine. This piece represents the unique nature of baroque music. It touches your heart with each nota it has. Today while I was listening to it again after years, I felt to find it’s lyrics via net and I was about to lose my hope.
Thank you…
Thanks so much. I love this piece as first time when I listened to it.
Wonderful music is capable to calm all the suffering, particularly purify spirits.
Nulla in mundo pax sincera is probably my favourrite Vivaldi’s work he has done. I usually listen to it when I am sad or in bad mood.
P.S.- Daniele was right it is soLa and not soIa.
Well, it happens that the movie “Shine” as well as “Immortal beloved” are of my favorites. I listen to classical music since I was 7 y/o. However I enjoyed the Billboard tops, as any other teenager… now I’m 35 and the “Nulla in munda pax sincera” as well as the Piano Concierto No.3 (Rachmaninoff) among other “monstrousus compositions” still on my top’s favorites… You never know… but It’s glad to see people interested in the same chanels…!! Thank you for this lyirics and the translation. Now I can share with my wife and my son.
Thank U very much, now we can just float allong the lyric as well. I just don’t understand something: in the music, Jane Edwards doesn’t flollow the complete lyrics, she just keeps repeating the initial strings. Why?
Thanks again,
JVF

I thankie for it, Shine is one of my favorite movies of all time. “Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera” has dwelled within me ever since I heard it, which was about eight years ago. I never listened to the soundtrack too. I just remember the way the music sounded to me. I always wanted to sing it too. I consider it a freedom to listen to anything Vivaldi has done. My parents used to play four seasons for me to help me get to bed.
